The History of Columbia TriStar Television
From Columbia Pictures Television to Columbia TriStar
Columbia TriStar Television (CTT) began in 1994 as the successor company to Columbia Pictures Television (CPT). CPT, in turn, had been formed in 1974 as the television production arm of Columbia Pictures.
In 1989, CPT was acquired by Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE). SPE then merged CPT with TriStar Pictures, a film studio it had acquired in 1987, to form Columbia TriStar Television.
CTT's Early Years
CTT's early years were marked by a number of successful television programs, including "Seinfeld," "Friends," and "ER." The company also produced a number of made-for-television movies and miniseries.
In 1999, CTT was renamed Sony Pictures Television (SPT). SPT has continued to produce successful television programs, including "The Blacklist," "The Goldbergs," and "The Crown."
CTT's Logo
CTT's logo was a stylized version of the Columbia Pictures logo, with the word "TRISTAR" appearing above the word "COLUMBIA." The logo was designed by Saul Bass.
A widescreen variant of the CTT logo was created in 1999. This logo was used on a number of CTT productions, including "The West Wing" and "Alias."
Legacy
CTT played a major role in the development of television in the United States. The company produced some of the most popular and acclaimed television shows of all time.
CTT's legacy continues today through its successor company, Sony Pictures Television, which remains one of the largest and most successful television production companies in the world.
